Best Air Fryer Cinnamon Apple Chips (No Sugar!)

Ugh, snack time in my house. It’s always a thing, right? I was so tired of the kids asking for crunchy things and the only options being chips or crackers. I started messing around with making Air Fryer Cinnamon Apple Chips, and my first few tries were just… sad. They were limp, kinda brownish apple slices. My family was polite but not impressed. Then I finally figured out the trick wasn’t the heat, it was how ridiculously thin I needed to slice them. When I finally got it right, the little snap sound they made was everything.

What You’ll Need

This is barely even a recipe, you only need like, three things. It’s more of a method, really.

  • 2 large apples: I always grab Honeycrisp or Gala when I see them; they just have the best natural sweetness and don’t turn to mush. But honestly? Just use whatever apple you’ve got rolling around in your fruit drawer. It’ll work.
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon: Whatever you have in the spice rack is fine.
  • A splash of lemon juice: This is my secret weapon to keep them from looking old and brown two seconds after I slice them. Totally optional, but it helps.

Let’s Get Cooking: The Simple Steps

This is how I do it. No weird steps, I promise.

Step 1: Slice up the apples

First, just wash the apples. I don’t even bother coring them half the time because the little star shape in the middle of the chip looks kind of neat. Now, if you have a mandoline slicer, this is its moment to shine. It makes getting the slices crazy thin so much easier. If you don’t have one, no worries. Just grab your best knife and take an extra minute to get them as thin as you possibly can. That’s the key.

Step 2: Give them a quick toss

Throw all your apple slices in a bowl, add that tiny splash of lemon juice and the cinnamon. Just get your hands in there and gently toss them all together. You’re not trying to cake it on, you just want a light dusting on every slice.

Step 3: Don’t crowd the basket

Okay, here’s the one thing you really can’t skip: lay the slices in a single layer in your air fryer. They absolutely cannot be overlapping. If they’re piled up on each other, they just steam and get soft. It’s a pain to cook in a few batches, I know, but it’s the only way they get that real chip-like crunch.

Step 4: Let the air fryer do its thing

I set my air fryer to around 150∘C (300∘F). It usually takes my machine about 12 minutes, but I start peeking in on them after 10 minutes because all these things cook a little differently. They’re done when they look dry and are starting to curl up at the edges.

Step 5: The cool down is when the crunch happens

This is important! When you pull them out, don’t panic if they still feel a bit soft. They’re supposed to. Just lay them out on a wire cooling rack and forget about them for ten minutes. As they cool down, they get incredibly crispy. You’ll know they’re ready when you pick one up and it snaps. That’s the best part.

Step 2

Throw the slices in a bowl. add the lemon juice and cinnamon and just toss it all together with your hands.

Step 3

Lay the apple slices in the air fryer basket. make sure they dont overlap or they wont get crispy. you gotta cook in batches.

Step 4

Air fry around 150C or 300F for about 10-14 minutes. flip them halfway through. they should look dry and a little curly.

Step 5

Put them on a wire rack to cool down. this is super important. they get crunchy as they cool. dont eat them right away.

Notes

  • use any crisp apple you like seriously.
  • they get crispy after they cool down not before. be patient.
  • store them in a container but they probably wont last that long.
